As much as I've always loved Lifeblood.
It's the second disc I'm playing the most. I remember some b-sides. But they've finally gotten this production sheen. I know Everyone Knows/Nobody Cares. But I was this years old today before I could tell how beautiful the keyboard sound was in the intro.

Other page it reached 10 on two other charts.
Do you think it was the tour date and tickets?
And if we get a future interview and they go "Well we were going to make a double album with Millennium gig b-sides"
I'll be YOU FUCKING MANNNICSSSS!!!

That second disc is well worth it alright. I never took to the Lifeblood era B-Sides as much as some others, but am enjoying them a lot more this past few days. Always had favourites from those tracks like Everyone Knows / Litany / Antarctic / No Jubilees. Discovering the merits of the others through this reissue.

One of my top tracks from the entire era was then and still is 'Nixon'. Love it! Synth-pop glory.

I do think it's worth saying that for a Manics album, it's not the strongest collection of songs. I think that's the main point. And I wonder what the bad meeting with the record company that he mentions was all about. Probably the record company heard a few rough mixes and knew it was shit. Also remember that the main promo for the album and the singles was basically a Tim Lovejoy show. Not your fault Greg!

I enjoyed the quiet digs at SATT and PFAYM.

The interview also makes me think that they were planning a record for 2002/2003, bottled it and went with Forever Delayed and Lipstick Traces instead. Seems like they had about 10 tracks ready to record in 2002.

Great interview! Also:

I remember a conversation in the studio in 2004 where Nicky Wire just said -- and this was never mentioned again -- "Why don't we just announce we're splitting up and then just put the record out?"
Yeah, they should've done just that!

Have to wonder what the reception would have been like if Door to the River, Grace of God and 4 Ever Delayed were on Lifeblood instead of scattered amongst the compilations.

When Greg was interviewed on the what is music podcast he said it was to do with the record company being concerned about a lack of singles, which then prompted James to come up with Glasnost.

Glasnost being a potential hit single delivered on order as requested by the record company feels quite sarcastic. Maybe the sarcasm is wishful thinking on my part.

Haha, yes I would like to think so too. Funny that in spite of that the record company still went with Nixon. Maybe they had hopes of a much longer campaign. Nixon first, then Empty Souls, A song for departure, 1985 and Glasnost to really drag it out. It wouldnt have sounded particularly our of place on the radio in 04-05 really.
