Agree. It makes sense having her join in on LBN and YLA but not keen on this Manics with friends thing again (I remember 4 or 5 years ago Wayne Murray playing the info to NSAF which was a shocker).

Did anyone else hear the backing track slip out of sync really badly during Sapporo?

Sound was odd, generally.

Biggest eyebrow raiser was how painfully slow ‘Faster’ was at the start. It seems to have sped up considerably by the end, but still.

I still don’t like ‘Tolerate’ to finish, especially not when it’s (ironically, given the previous paragraph) played so bloody fast.

SkyArts1 only had half an hour, 4 tracks I think. Unless I missed more of their set earlier. Hopefully full set appears on YouTube

Agreed, I don’t like it as a closer and nothing else is a patch on ADFL for that. I get they probably felt like they needed to end on a ahhhhh/woahhhh call/response with it being a festival (I don’t think I’ve ever seen them do it quite like this before Bath/IOW) and audience participation is the done thing for headliners, but that’s never really been them (see also: no encore, which didn’t go down well with some of the crowd last night lol)

It was my first time visiting the Isle of Wight and the ferry journey was a bit of a novelty and made it feel more like a holiday. I was glad we were under the tent as it rained quite a bit through the afternoon.

Still not a fan of The Enemy tbh, but then I wasn’t the first time round! And whilst Echo and the Bunnymen have some good songs, Ian McCulloch was exceptionally grumpy and rude to the roadies. He whinged all the way through their set about all sorts (I couldn’t hear all of his grumbling), including complaining about one of the techs talking too loud when he was trying to fix something on stage, he made a shit joke about how the IOW can’t spell ‘white’ properly, he took exception to music being played when they came back on for an encore, ignoring the fact it was actually live music from a nearby smaller stage he could hear. I don’t think their set was recorded either (the camera disappeared for their slot then re-appeared when they were done), despite them being listed on the Sky coverage, so I can only assume he stropped and refused to be filmed. I don’t know if he’s always like that, but it left a bad taste in my mouth, topped off by a super fan behind me who apparently was saying about us and others around us that we obviously didn’t know who the band were?? Which shows how little she must have known about the Manics (who were the only other band still to play at this point, so she must have known we were there for them) working with McCulloch and covering one of his songs

As for the Manics, despite a few sound issues at times, I loved it! It wasn’t quite as good as Bath obviously, but it was nice they got a longer set than is often the case at festivals and they still kept some Lifeblood in there. And no covers, hurrah! I’d rather The Anchoress dueted or took over vocals on This is Yesterday than hear another cover personally. I’ve really missed seeing them live over the past year, and even then last year we only saw them as support for The Killers. So it was good to get back on the road (and sea!) for them

Wasn't expecting to get A Song For Departure in a 25 minute highlights show on Sky. Enjoyed that!

When did they start doing the interlude bit near the end of Tolerate? That's a hard NO! from me.

Impressed with the setlist.

Not being contrary - but I much prefer Tolerate as the closer. Jimbo gets to rock out and all the na naaaas.

Plus lyrically it is a million times better than DFL.

Going to be honest, the Manics opening a festival set with 1985 was not on my list of things I expected to happen in 2023.

I’ve downloaded the 25 minute closer on Sky but is there a way of listening to the whole Manics set (or even a chunk of it)?

Had a look on the Absolute website and can’t find it on listen again.

Thank you. That part at the end of Tolerate I was like "... what are they doing??" but it REALLY got the crowd going
Odd bit near the start of Enola Alone, thought they'd messed up.

llona78 has put up his or her videos from the front row. If you are on here, thank you so much.

1985, Little Baby Nothing, and Faster are incredible.
